Brandy has opened up about her journey, sharing that acting wasn’t something she initially imagined for herself.
In a recent conversation with Variety, the Boy Is Mine hitmaker reflected on her remarkable career across music, film, television, and Broadway. She explained that, at the start, she only saw herself as a singer.
“It’s beautiful because a lot of my life, I didn’t see for myself,” she said. “Like I never saw an actress or I never saw mixing music with different opportunities. All I saw was me wanting my voice to do a little bit of what Whitney (Houston)’s voice could do. And that was my dream.”
Brandy went on to achieve extraordinary success at a young age. “When I first started, it just seemed like everything was possible,” the 47-year-old shared. “And I was able to accomplish a lot at a very young age and just dream really big. I’m still dreaming big. It hasn’t stopped.”
Her acting career began in 1993 with a role on the ABC sitcom Thea, before she landed her own series, Moesha, in 1996. The show ran for six seasons and cemented her place as a television star. She later starred in the beloved 1997 TV film Cinderella and made her big-screen debut in 1998’s I Still Know What You Did Last Summer.
Looking back, Brandy admitted that balancing both music and acting was not always easy. “The juggling was a bit difficult because my mom, who was my manager at the time, we were both new to it,” she recalled. “We were going with the flow and just trying to be great at both career paths.”
Still, she describes discovering acting as a passion as one of the most rewarding surprises of her career. “For me, never even seeing that that was a possibility, just doing anything I could to reach more people with my music, but then to discover acting is also a passion—that was an amazing discovery.”
