Medical staff to begin open-ended countrywide strike from April 7

The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has announced that it will begin an indefinite nationwide strike at 12:00 am on Tuesday, April 7, 2026.

This decision comes after the Federal Government suspended the revised Professional Allowance Table—an agreement that had been central to resolving the doctors’ 2025 strike.

NARD President, Dr. Shuaibu Ibrahim, described the move as “unfortunate” during an extraordinary virtual meeting of the association’s National Executive Council (NEC) held on Saturday.

Following discussions, the NEC voted to launch a total and comprehensive strike, a step expected to cause widespread disruption across public hospitals and raise serious concerns among patients and healthcare stakeholders.

Dr. Ibrahim confirmed: “After extensive deliberations, the NEC resolved to embark on a total industrial and comprehensive strike beginning at 12:00 am on Tuesday, April 7, 2026.”
